Terje Traavik har sin bakgrunn fra Norges veterinærhøyskole, Statens Institutt for Folkehelse og Universitetet i Tromsø, der han fikk sin doktorgrad i 1979. Han har drevet forskning siden 1970, spesielt innen virusøkologi samt molekylær og medisinsk, kreftrelatert virologi. I 1983 ble han professor ved Universitetet i Tromsø, Institutt for medisinsk biologi. På begynnelsen av 1990-tallet ledet han det nasjonale forskningsprogrammet ”Miljøvirkninger av bioteknologi”. Traavik var en av GenØks grunnleggere og var stiftelsens daglige leder 1998-2001. Siden 2001 har han vært forskningssjef ved GenØk, og i 2003 ble han også utnevnt til professor i genøkologi ved Universitetet i Tromsø. Traavik arbeider med flere forskningsprosjekter ved GenØk, blant annet rettet mot utvikling av genøkologiske modellsystemer for studier av GM organismer og vaksiner. I årenes løp har Traavik publisert mer enn 220 vitenskapelige artikler og bokkapitler. Han har samarbeidsprosjekter med en rekke forskningsinstitusjoner i inn- og utland, og er en aktiv, internasjonalt etterspurt foredragsholder. Han er medlem av Bioteknologinemnda (2008-2012), og fungerer som offisiell rådgiver for EMEA (European Medicines Agency), samt en rekke andre organisasjoner og vitenskapelige komiteer. Terje Traavik har blant annet mottatt Stiftelsen Erna og Olav Aakres pris for fremragende kreftforskning i 1992.
